CuriousHour

Soulful noise explorers from London

Wow... real instruments being played by real people with real vocals that aren’t overly vocal “corrected”. I had to pinch myself:-) I really enjoyed listening to this... it’s raw and honest. Female vocalist has great expression.... reminds me a bit of the old Grace Slick (i.e., “White Rabbit”). Even the guitar solo is reminiscent of the psychedelia days. (That’s a compliment... pure energy) Great dynamics in the song. I would love to see this band in a club setting. Blown away by the build-up of the song and how the vocalist keeps up with the energy. So nice to hear real music with real feel. I’m “opening the door”! THANKS!

“Curiously Soulful”

Curious hour, a four piece from London that I have had the pleasure of writing about before have released two singles this year: “She Lies” and “Wolf”. If the Arctic Monkeys were to describe the mood of these tracks they’d describe them as “mardy”.

“She Lies” wouldn’t be too far out of place in a Vietnam war move, with a muddy guitar/ bass combo and poignant vocals. The track is a real mood setter that finishes with an “ A Day in the life” style ending but on guitar: a solid way to finish.

“Wolf” would place quite nicely in an episode of Peaky Blinders; the drums pan from left to right to create a wonderful primal effect whilst mellow guitar strums around soulful vocals. The track eventually once again builds to a reverb-full cacophony before ending on guitar feedback. Nice.

It’s good to hear from Curious Hour again, I hope these tracks lead to an album or EP.

FEBRUARY 25, 2020 BY ECLECTICMUSICLOVERIN

“She Lies” is a dark and moody track – a “murder ballad” as described by band guitarist Andy. The intense fuzz-covered jangly guitars and deep, muddy grooves are fantastic, with an almost watery quality that quite effectively complements the grim narrative laid out by the lyrics, which were written by Emily.

Her raw, soulful vocals are incredibly powerful in expressing the pain and terror of her dire circumstances – that her man is going to drown her to punish her for things she’s done. The words “she lies” can be interpreted to have two meanings: that she’s a liar, and that she now lies at the bottom of the river. Some pretty heavy stuff here.

The beautifully filmed but rather disturbing video shows scenes of Emily walking down to a river and touching the water, as a mother desperately clinging to a young boy who would appear to be her son (played by her actual son), knowing it will be the last time she’ll see him, and her lying dead in the river. Have a look and listen

2020 brings us the latest music from the London based quartet and boy was it worth the wait. Released on 27th February ‘She Lies’ is no let down in regards to the classic CuriousHour  formula of excellent writing, superb playing and stunning vocals. In fact I would say that the band has developed a more mature sound. ‘She Lies’ wets the appetite for more and the great news is that more is coming.

CuriousHour can boast one of the most exciting and soulful vocalists to come out of the UK in decades. Emily Grazebrook is that good. Her ability to instantly seduce the listener is astounding. On first listen of ‘She Lies’ I was hooked, so much so that there soon became a second listen and then a third…you get the picture.

But it’s not just the perfect vocals of Emily that make CuriousHour special, the whole band have that magic chemistry that draws you in and keeps you listening. They are all masters of their crafts and as far as the songwriting is concerned, they nail it, they totally nail it.
